Views

2005

2005 was a very exciting year, with international trips to Rome, Berlin, Paris, China, and England. I was also lucky enough to attend Super Computing in Seattle, WA and to visit Washington, DC, stopping by several Civil War battlefields along the way. Family visits included Columbus, California (for Stacy and Scott's wedding), and Chicogo for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

2006

It was another busy year with international trips to Ireland, Bonn, Gettysburg, Tokoyo, Gothenburg, and Krakow. We also had nice family visits to Columbus, OH; Girard, KS; and Chicago, IL. This year was our grand daughter Emma's first birthday. We were also able to spend some time during Christmas in both Girard and Chicago. I was able to ride the motorcycle to Washington, DC for the Internet2 meeting, hitching up with Jerry Sobieski in West Virginia along the way; and later visiting Gettysburg on the ride home. The visit to Poland was the most interesting, and Auschwitz was especially sobering.

2007

The big event for the year was our niece Lisa's wedding to Matt in June. It was a great event. The year 2007 also saw a variety of trips to other countrys. In January we attended the DICE meeting in Rome and went on to Amsterdam to visit with the SURFnet and University of Amsterdam folks. In April and May, we had trips to Abuja in Nigeria and Copenhagen in Denmark. In September we visited Prague, Czech Repulic for the GLIF (and DICE control plane) meetings. Along the way were trips to Berkeley to visit the ESnet folks, to Washington, DC for the Internet2 Spring member meeting, to Reno for the Super Computing 2007 meeting, and to San Francisco for a DICE control plane meeting. Family visits included our grandson Nolan's fourth birthday party, thanksgiving in Chicago, and of course, christmas in Girard and Chicago. Pictures of the dogs and the variety of wildlife that come to visit us at our country home in Michigan are also included, along with our usual viewing of the July 4th fireworks from our front porch.

2008

The year began with a trip to Hawaii for the Joint Techs meeting of Internet2 and ESnet. It was a good meeting and we rented bicycles, riding 150 miles, but taking only a few pictures. In February, we attended a meeting in Athens of the European, Canadian, and US research and education networks. It was a beautiful trip, but ended in the first blizzard in Athens in 20 years. Following that, Carolyn and I had a wonderful ride to Arlington, VA for the Internet2 Spring Member Meeting , the Outer Banks in North Carolina, the Smoky Mountains, and Knoxville, TN. It was a great ride. Following that was a long trip to Brugges, Belgium for the TERENA Meeting, and on to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for an RNP meeting. From Rio, I flew into Atlanta and right on to Kansas City for a Great Plains Meeting. It was good to be back in Kansas again! In July we attended the GEANT technical meeting in Berlin, spending a couple of days driving around the city. In August I had the prilvilege of attending the APAN meeting with my good friend Heather, visiting Auckland, the neat city of Wellington, and the incredibly beautiful Queenstown, with mountains all around. I was able to ride a bike for three days, a mountain bike no less, something that's questionable for a die-hard road rider.

2009

These are photos from 2009. We spent New Years in Girard, KS and later in January traveled to Lancaster, PA for a friend's wedding. In February I had quick trip to San Francisco to visit Stanford University. In April our friend Karen cut down three walnut trees and let me haul away the wood. We had fun milling the lumber at Sawmill Express in Manchester and stacking it in our barn to dry. Later in April I attended a network research meeting in Venice, Italy. Venice is a fabulous city and we enjoyed the trip very much. There are a bunch of cranes that nest in the Manchester area during the summer and they would visit our area regularly, knocking on basement windows. I've taken many photos of the cranes over the years. In June I retired from Internet2 and spent most of the summer around home, working on various remodeling projects, and doing some woodworking, along with working on my photography. I've taken approximately 12,000 pictures this decade, and we've seen digital photography become the norm during that period. In November we vacationed for 10 days in Thailand and it was a beautiful and relaxing trip. Thailand is a great country to visit with a wonderful culture and very friendly people. Enjoy!
